Panoply.io is an independent directory of data tools and a publication about the modern data stack. We review warehouses, ingestion tools, transformation and orchestration frameworks, BI, reverse ETL, observability, catalogs and the AI data stack, one honest card per tool, with real pricing verified against the vendor’s own page on a stated date. No vendor writes their own page, and nobody can pay to move a score.
Who runs it
The site is published by Lumination AI, a London consultancy that helps companies put AI to work with results you can measure.
The name and the domain belonged to a data-warehouse product that ran from 2015 to 2026. We acquired the domain after the product was discontinued. Panoply.io is an independent publication, not affiliated with SQream, Scailium or the former Panoply product.
What we care about
Independence. A directory is only useful while the reader can trust it more than a vendor can influence it. So: vendors never write their own pages, sponsored slots are labelled and show the tool’s real score, and no commercial relationship moves a number. When we get something wrong, the correction is visible on the page.
AI, in the open. We build AI systems for a living and we use them here: collecting signals, watching for price changes, drafting first passes. The division of labour is fixed. AI does the legwork; a person checks every fact against a primary source and signs every verdict.
Precise measurement. Numbers on Panoply are all collected. Pricing is read live from the vendor’s own page on the date printed on the card. Adoption comes from public sources (GitHub, PyPI, Docker pulls, Stack Overflow, G2 and Gartner review counts), refreshed monthly. The Panoply Score shows all six of its parts on every tool page, and a part we can’t measure shows N/A.

How we review
- We test hands on each tool to the best of our ability.
- Pricing comes from the vendor’s page, checked on the date printed on the card, never from memory or a third-party listing.
- Adoption evidence is public and measurable: GitHub, package downloads, Docker pulls, Stack Overflow, Wikipedia, G2 and Gartner review volumes, collected monthly.
- Every score has a visible reason. The Panoply Score shows all six parts and the numbers behind them on every tool page.
- Verdicts are signed. The editorial part of the score comes with a one-line reason a human wrote and stands behind.
The Panoply Score
Every tool in the directory carries a score out of a maximum of 100. It answers one question from the buyer’s side: how good a bet is this tool, on the evidence we can check? The number is calculated from six parts, and every tool page shows each part with the figures behind it:
- Pricing honesty (20 points). Whether prices are published, whether there is a usable free option, whether you can buy without a sales call, and whether the bill is predictable.
- Adoption evidence (25). Public, verifiable usage: GitHub stars, package downloads, Docker pulls, Stack Overflow activity, Wikipedia readership and review volumes, each on a fixed logarithmic scale.
- Momentum (15). Release cadence and commit activity of the code that is the product, capped against automated releases.
- Openness and exit (15). Open-source licence, self-hosting, whether your data stays in open formats, and how hard it is to leave.
- Practitioner sentiment (10). G2 and Gartner Peer Insights ratings, weighted by review count and kept deliberately small, because review scores cluster and vendors campaign for them.
- Editorial verdict (15). Our own judgement after researching the tool, signed and given with a one-line reason.
The scales are fixed, so a tool’s score never moves because a competitor joined the directory. And no sponsor or affiliate relationship touches any part of it.
Public signals are collected again every month, prices are re-checked when a vendor changes its pricing page automatically, and each tool page prints the date and method version its score was computed with. The full method, every weight and the changelog live on the Panoply Score page.
How we make money
Yes we have to pay the bills too. Sponsored placements in the directory (a featured slot on category pages, marked “Featured”, showing the tool’s real score) and occasional affiliate links on tool pages. Neither changes the score, ranking or verdict. If a page carries a commercial relationship, it says so on that page.
Corrections
If a price, a fact or a score is wrong, please email hello@panoply.io with the page and the evidence. We fix errors visibly and note the change on the page.
If you make one of these tools
You can’t write your page, but you can make sure it’s right: send corrections to pricing, deployment options or integrations and we’ll verify and update. Sponsored placements are available for category pages; write to the same address.
